Blueyonder interview

She's the latest voice to emerge from the Beddingfield clan. Sister to Daniel, but definitely not the same. Classy, sassy and out to prove she's no manufactured pop doll. Natasha Bedingfield.
Blueyonder: What's been happening in your world of late, Natasha? "Well, I've been working on my new album which should be out in September. At the moment I'm promoting my single, and I'm very excited about the whole thing. I've been doing radio promo, singing on tv, doing some live performances. Being very busy, basically!"
Blueyonder: Tell us about the single...'Single' "Well, the single is about...being single! Throughout the whole making of the album I've been single and enjoying it. It's been quite fun actually. There are those Bridget Jones moments when you start singing 'All By Myself', but there's also the other side when you celebrate being single and enjoy it whilst it lasts!"
Blueyonder: So you're celebrating being a singleton? "Yeah! There's that element of girl power attached to it too. But I also think that guys can relate to the single too. And then married people too, they've been singing along to the single...I just hope it doesn't increase the divorce rate!"
Blueyonder: The song's very different to the kind of music that's littered all over the charts these days. Was being different something you set out to do? "I do try and not be like anyone else and just do what I like. I come from South East London which is a very multicultural area and I think that has a role to play in my music. I have been influenced by r'n'b, soul and rock - some of the songs on my album are a bit rocky."
Blueyonder: Is 'Single' a good indicator of what's coming up on the rest of the album? "It's a good introduction. I suppose the title is a bit quirky - people are already calling it 'Single Single' but I love the title as it's making a statement. I've got a song called 'I Bruise Easily' on the album, there's another called 'Size Matters'.
Blueyonder: Oooh er, can you please elaborate on that? "Well that basically states that size does matter, but not in the way that you think - it's what's inside your heart. I like quirky things. I'e got another song called, 'If You're Gonna Jump, Jump Far' and as the song says I'm looking for a guard dog, not a Chihuahua! Because it's true. If I was going to get a dog, I'd get a big one! The whole deal."
Blueyonder: Is there a wink behind everything that you do, Miss Bedingfield? "Yes. I'm a bit cheeky and very naughty!"
Blueyonder: You've worked with some great producers on the album. Was that daunting in any way? "It was amazing. It's been an incredible opportunity. I've had to learn to be quite strong as I've been working with a lot of men as well, and that's when I learn to get the stronger woman thing going to get my ideas across - you have to be quite confident. I've had to learn how to express my ideas. It's been amazing. I've learnt about being free, taking risks with my music. There's a lot of 'safe' music out there at the moment, which does make my work stand out because it isn't safe." |
