Natasha Bedingfield seems obsessed with writing, what with former No.1 'These Words' and new single 'Unwritten'. We grabbed her for a chat just to see how far her love of words goes...
TOTP: What's your favourite book?
Natasha: My favourite book is, I think, Lord of the Rings. It's fantastic. I love the story, I love the way Tolkien writes, and the detail, and things like that. It's an interesting read, and it's fantasy, it's not related to what I'm doing right now, so it's nice to be able to just go into a whole different world.
TOTP: Do you read a lot of fantasy?
Natasha: I like to read things that are fiction. I do. But I read all sorts of books.
TOTP: The saying goes that everybody has got a book in them - have you ever tried to write one?
Natasha: My album is like my book, really. It's called 'Unwritten', and I see life as like a book. I'm writing this book now with my life, and each day is like a page - that's why I called it 'Unwritten'. We're all writing a book as we go, really.
TOTP: Do you keep a diary of your private thoughts?
Natasha: I do like to keep a journal. I put poems and thoughts in there, and things like that.
TOTP: Has anyone else ever read it?
Natasha: Hmmmm...I've got quite trustworthy people around me. I hope not!
TOTP: If you could write a song for anyone else, who would it be, and why?
Natasha: Do you mean to someone, or for them to sing? I've sometimes written songs for people. I wrote a song for my little brother, and that was 'Unwritten', and some other songs for other people as well. It just depends - it's great if a song's related to a person, it's great inspiration for a song, I think.
TOTP: You've said that your mum used to sing to you when you were in the womb - what sort of songs did she sing?
Natasha: My mum used to sing little songs, nursery rhymes and things. It's quite interesting, because a lot of pop songs are quite nursery-rhymey, there's that kind of sing-songy thing, which is why you can't stop singing them, I think. I knew my mother's voice from a young age, and it always felt very natural to sing. I felt very connected to my mum as well.
TOTP: Are there any other instruments that you'd like to learn to play that you don't know how to play yet?
Natasha: I would love to learn to play the guitar better. I play a little bit for writing and stuff, but really I wouldn't call myself a guitar player. Some of the people in my band are, and they're amazing, and they shame me with their amazingness!
TOTP: If you could pick any song that someone else wrote this year, which one would you like to have written yourself?
Natasha: I love 'Free' by Estelle. I wish I could have written that.
TOTP: What's the strangest thing you've been asked to do since becoming famous?
Natasha: I get asked to do strange things all the time. People ask me to talk about my love life a lot, quite intimate details. I've been asked to - sometimes magazines have asked me to do weird things for shoots, like pretend I was eating dog food or something! [Laughs.]
TOTP: You're part of one of the most successful pop families of recent years. Who would you have in your ideal made-up pop family?
Natasha: Hmmm, let me think. Stevie Wonder and Aretha Frankin. Alicia Keys and...who's a guy that could fit in there? [Thinks for quite some time.] Usher. No, no, not Usher! Someone else. I choose...let's say someone a bit crazier, like Andre 3000.
TOTP: In the spirit of 'These Words', we're going to say some words and we want you to say the first thing that comes into your head. The first word is panda.
Natasha: Black and white.
TOTP: Success.
Natasha: Ummm...badges, trophies! [Laughs.]
TOTP: Minstrel.
Natasha: Guitar.
TOTP: Lazy.
Natasha: Couch.
TOTP: Party.
Natasha: Pooper.
TOTP: Puppy.
Natasha: Love!
TOTP: Sunshine.
Natasha: Suntan.
TOTP: America.
Natasha: Huge!
TOTP: And finally: does it annoy you when people pronounce your surname B'dingfield?
Natasha: They don't! Not many people pronounce it like that. [Giggles.]
TOTP: Perhaps not to your face...
Natasha: Actually, you're right, some people have. I don't know, it's quite a long name so maybe they can't say it. It's all right, I won't be hard on them!
